Free on-line Buteyko training for children

Just to let you know that the Buteyko Clinic is currently offering their on-line training for children and teenagers for free due to a generous donation.  See link below:

https://buteykoclinic.com/buteykochildren/ I discovered Patrick Mckown’s book The Oxygen Advantage a couple of months ago and was fascinated to learn the importance of how you breathe not only for myself but also for those children I meet who are hyperactive, may have an ADHD diagnosis and the thousands with blocked noses and asthma. I ran 2 teleseminars to explain the essentials to my community and I have been shocked to discover that almost no parents of ADHD children have any idea that mouth breathing, rather than nose that goes down into your belly, and has a significant connection with hyperactivity and a lot more symptoms. I have found more and more research, watched Patrick’s YouTubes and read some of his material. The Buteyko Clinic is now offering this on-line programme for free for children and teenagers and of course their parents. I really recommend you and your child listen to the 7 short videos and download the material. I so wish I had known about this material when I was a child. When in school or using mindfulness techniques don’t forget to use nose breathing, rather than mouth breathing to create a calm environment. https://buteykoclinic.com/buteykochildren/ If you have read my book The Elephants in the Classroom, I talk much about skills to become grounded, correct breathing is a prerequisite to becoming calm and grounded. #buteyko #elephantsintheclassroom #oxygen #ADHD #mckown #breathing #mindfulness

Jumpstarting Literacy and Numeracy

Empowering Learning is all about understanding the learners’ experiences, what makes for successful learning and establishing where learning can go wrong. Jumpstarting Literacy and Numeracy is one of a suite of programmes offered under this concept, offering skills to parents and educationalists alike.

The Jumpstarting Literacy and Numeracy™ process includes three main tenets which can be seen below. These form the basis of the process and on the course you will learn how to impart this to your students easily, quickly and with rapid results. You will also get the research evidence supporting the process as well feedback from the principals and teachers who have been using it with such great effect in their schools and classrooms.

MENTAL IMAGERY IS A SKILL FOR LEARNING. Mental Imagery is essential for reading, effective spelling, making sense of and remembering what is read, mental calculations, problem solving and legible handwriting.

Neuroscience has shown that fluent readers use 3 co-activated areas of the brain: knowing the pronunciation of the word, understanding the meaning and recognising the visual representation of the whole word. As it is developed naturally by some students it was believed that this was an inherent skill and therefore could not be taught – we now KNOW that this is not the case and it can be learned through the Jumpstarting process.

THE OPTIMAL LEARNING STATE Students learn most effectively when in the Optimal Learning State, i.e. relaxed body, alert mind. Some students cannot develop or control their mental imagery skills until they are in this state.

Results have shown that knowing how to get into this state easily helps to lower stress, increase concentration and focus and also improves memory and recall.

This skill is useful for the whole school and gives staff the tools for creating calmer students, calmer classrooms and a calmer school! Neuroscience has shown that being this state, often called ‘Flow’, helps students and staff to be more effective.

META-COGNISANCE IN LEARNERS Mental Imagery skills can be easily learned provided the right training approach is applied.

Helping students better understand their inner mental processes helps them recognise their existing strengths and adjust any ineffective learning strategies accordingly.

A ‘coaching’ approach is the best way to do this and includes:

  • Active listening
  • The conscious use of language.
  • Asking questions from a position of curiosity and investigation.
  • Observing eye patterns, body language and other non-verbal communication.

THE PROGRAMME CAN HELP WITH THE FOLLOWING: Literacy skills: spelling, reading, reading comprehension and writing

Numeracy skills: mental arithmetic, geometry, addition and times tables, algebra

General learning skills: memory, concentration, revision and exam techniques . Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia and ADHD.

You will practice the skills you are learning and go away with the confidence to teach others how to overcome the debilitating effects they are experiencing and become symptom free.

Teaching the Empowering Learning material is so rewarding. Never a day goes by without seeing immense change some across someone’s face. As soon as you have completed this training you are encouraged to practice and keep records of your clients. The accreditation paperwork has an extremely useful format for your records.

This programme is now available as a series of 6 teleseminars so you can learn these skills on-line in the comfort of your own home, in an interactive setting, guided by Olive Hickmott.

The 2-day open programme is run by Olive Hickmott in Hertfordshire, Paula Monti in Berkshire and Sara Haboubi in the Republic of Ireland. All three trainers are available to train in specific groups in other locations by arrangement.

11.hold-book-up-when-reading_smallPeople often ask what mental images are and here is a simple explanation.  Mental imagery is normal, just like breathing, and they are quite simply the images we hold in our head.  All these images, presented as either pictures or videos, are held in your occipital lobe, the part of your brain just above the “dent” at the top of your neck where your skull meets your spine.

Scroll down for your FREE copy.

We use mental images every minute of every day, often outside of our conscious awareness, but we seldom know how to make the best use of them. For example, how do you find things like your house or your car?  How do you recognize people you know your spouse, parents or children?  How do you find the ingredients for a meal?  How do you plan what to wear and where to find your clothes?  People take mental images for granted yet know next to nothing about them.

We believe it will help every parent and child to understand how mental imagery is used in the learning process, from a child’s earliest days and certainly before they reach school age.

My own practice and the work of other Empowering LearningTM Practitioners has helped me piece together the vital role of mental imagery in the whole learning process.  Each of the learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, Autism all have connections with mental imagery.  Now we know these connections, it is time to enable children before the age of 5 years old to learn these simple skills and avoid a lifetime of confusion.

Barking up the wrong tree

Barking2Has anyone noticed the actual problem with idioms and highly visual children?  Children with Dyslexia, ADHD, Aspergers and Autism are likely to have excellent visual strengths so mentioning an idiom to them sends them off into trying to sort out expressions like : Barking up the wrong tree!

Here is an extract from my new book: Why Bright Creative Kids Get Left Behind….and How to Change this.      Neurodiversity through the Lens of Mental Imagery…pre-publication, get 2 FREE chapters  here.

An idiom a common word or phrase with a culturally understood meaning that differs from what its composite words’ denotations would suggest. For example, an English speaker would understand the phrase “kick the bucket” to mean “to die” – and also to actually kick a bucket.  Idioms are a big challenge to many highly visual students. Reflecting on this through the lens of mental imagery, I realised what the problem is.  Idioms are very visual, here are a few examples, that will send a visual thinker off into the wrong train of thought:

A hot potato                                               A penny for your thoughts

Actions speak louder than words          At the drop of a hat

Back to the drawing board                      Ball is in your court

Cut corners                                                Be glad to see the back of

Beat around the bush.                             Best of both worlds

Best thing since sliced bread                  Bite off more than you can chew

Blessing in disguise                                  Burn the midnight oil

Can’t judge a book by its cover              Caught between two stools

Costs an arm and a leg                             Cross that bridge when you come to it

Cry over spilt milk                                     Curiosity killed the cat

To do mental maths you need mental images of numbers

numberspersonsmallIs this what maths seems like to you?

When I was a small child I was great at mental maths, I took my GCSE a year early (that was unheard of in those days) and packed in 3 “A” level Maths in the next 2 years.  I was pretty dreadful at literacy but great at maths and nobody ever asked me how I did it.  I then did a degree in Maths and became a Software Engineer.  Still nobody asked me how I did it – I had always had good mental images of pictures and numbers, but none of words.

Years later I found out the key to success in mental arithmetic, you need mental images of numbers – its quite obvious really, but nobody tells you.  So to all those children who are struggling with maths, including learning those monotonous times tables, learn to visualise numbers and all maths will become so much easier.

I and our international network of #empoweringlearning coaches teach people every day these simple skills.  I can assure you that mental maths will always be difficult, whatever scheme you use, if you are not visualising numbers – after all its called mental maths isn’t it? So why don’t we ask small children if they can picture numbers, it would save masses of time and much heartache – if they are not picturing numbers we can teach them simple and easily.

Topics like rotating images will probably be one of the subjects in maths that is easy, because you can picture the images moving around.  On the other hand algbra, with things like 2x+3y seems as if it is from another planet, to someone who normally thinks in pictures.  Try thinking of it as 2 cats plus 3 dogs and it will be easier, as however hard you try you can’t make cats into dogs.

The consortium have done a great job bringing to the attention of the wider public, many of the key messages promoted by Empowering Learning, and in a really teacher friendly format, for example:

  • Neurodiversity is better than labelling and includes strengths with challenges
  • Breaking labels down into functional skills and creating a student profile built on these functional skills.
  • Metacognition – one of the most impactful and cost effective interventions to explain aspects of how we think and remember
  • Identifying a whole spectrum of overlapping learning difficulties labels, which together with functional skills gets away from a bit of this and a bit of that
  • Looking at what is behind poor behaviour
  • Using positive language
  • Allowing time to think

We recommend that whether or not you have engaged with Empowering Learning, you take a look at these FREE materials and then return so we can show you how you can take the next steps for your students, children and yourself with our #jumpstartingliteracy and numeracy, #pathwaystolearning programmes or individual coaching.
